How to guide a medical doctor's career toward contributing to organ printing and tissue engineering?

I'm a first year med student with interest in organ printing and tissue engineering. How do I make the most of my schooling toward furthering this new branch of medicine? There is a PhD doing research in mesenchymal multipotent stem cells at my school, should I approach him? What should i say? Thank you.
