What do the "end of the world is nigh" people hope to achieve?

Yes, today has been a terrible human tragedy. We have seen some awful sights and I really feel bad for the folks that are caught up in it. But why do people insist on making a natural disaster equate to the end for all humanity? It seems rather tasteless. Do they crave the end?
