Ok to grow Norfolk Island Pines in the ground?

I've been googling around and almost all posts mention leaving it in a pot as an indoor plant. I have one about 3 feet tall that I recently planted under a flowering plum tree with partial sun. It has about 5 feet before it would reach the plum tree branches... I'm in the SF Bay Area. Ok to leave it where it is does it have to go back into a pot. It can't go indoors so that option is out.
