Why did the A.N.C. adopt such an ugly flag?

The old flag was a work of art, based on the history of the country. The new flag is a striking mess of totally opposing colours and the shapes are so basic. It's tasteless and I hate it. I guess the idea is to resemble the shield of an African warrior. It looks like Swaziland's.
